"VMware" refers to a suite of virtualization products. To provide the correct installation instructions, I need to know which product you intend to install.
Please choose from the most common options below. If you are a beginner, you are likely looking for Option 1 or 2.
1. For Windows or Linux Desktop (VMware Workstation)
You would use this to run a virtual operating system (like Linux or a second instance of Windows) inside your current computer.
VMware Workstation Pro: This is now free for personal use.
VMware Workstation Player: A simplified, free version, but most users should now use Workstation Pro since it is free.
General Steps:
Download: Go to the official Broadcom download portal (VMware’s parent company) and create an account to download the installer for your OS (Windows .exe or Linux .bundle).
Run Installer: Double-click the downloaded file (on Linux, you may need to run it via the terminal with sudo sh filename.bundle).
Follow Wizard: Proceed through the setup wizard.
License (Pro): For personal use, select the option that indicates you are using it for non-commercial purposes when prompted.
2. For Mac Desktop (VMware Fusion)
Similar to Workstation, this allows you to run Windows, Linux, or another version of macOS inside your current Mac.
VMware Fusion Pro: This is also now free for personal use.
General Steps:
Download: Download the .dmg file from the Broadcom download portal (account required).
Open DMG: Mount the downloaded DMG file.
Run Installer: Double-click the VMware Fusion icon inside the window.
Security Permissions: You will need to allow system extensions in macOS System Settings during installation.
License: Select the "free for personal use" option when prompted.
3. For Servers (VMware vSphere / ESXi)
This is enterprise-level software. It is a "bare-metal hypervisor," meaning it is installed directly on the physical hardware, replacing the operating system entirely. You would use this to turn a computer into a dedicated virtual machine host.
ESXi: The hypervisor itself.
vCenter: Management software used to manage multiple ESXi hosts.
General Steps:
Download: Download the ESXi ISO file from the Broadcom portal (requires a license or trial).
Create Bootable Media: Burn the ISO to a CD or flash it to a USB drive (e.g., using Rufus).
Boot from Media: Insert the media into the target server and boot from it.
Installation Wizard: Follow the text-based prompts to select the disk, set a root password, and configure network settings.
